Teenagers & stress - how Kinesiology can help
Share
You might be surprised to learn that a lot of the people that I see in my Kinesiology clinic are teenagers.ย
As a mum to a 15 year old myself, I really see and understand the stress that teens experience and it's a lot different to the type of stress that us Gen X's or Millennials might have experienced; if you think allllll the way back to when you were a teen (some longer than others๐๐ฝโโ๏ธ , no offenceย ๐ ) there is one thing that we didn't have to deal with on a daily basis and at the volume that teens and kids are exposed to...
technology and social media.ย
Not only are teens experiencing puberty, friendship challenges, school, sport, all the things, but add on top of that the world of social media and instant access to them, at all times of the day.ย
Associate Professor Alina Morawska, Centre Director at theย Parenting and Family Support Centreย inย the University of Queenslands School of Psychology,ย says teenagers on social media have โincreased exposure to harm, social isolation, depression, anxiety and cyber-bullying.โ
According to Australian statistics fromย Roy Morgan:
- girls aged 14-24 spendย 822 minutesย on social media each week (aboutย 2 hours a day)
- boys aged 14-24 spendย 528 minutesย a week (justย over an hour each day)
Excessive use of social media by teens can lead to addiction,ย inappropriate and irresponsible online behaviour, andย signs of mental illnessย such as depression, anxiety or disordered eating.
So how can Kinesiology help with the stress that teenagers are exposed to and experience?
BODY AWARENESS
Kinesiology helps teenagers develop a deeper understanding of their bodies, including posture, movement patterns, and muscle tension. By becoming aware of these physical sensations, they can identify areas of stress and learn techniques to relax and release tension through specific exercises or stretches.
BREATHING TECHNIQUES
Kinesiology often incorporates breathing exercises to help manage stress. Deep breathing techniques, such as diaphragmatic breathing, can activate the body's relaxation response and reduce anxiety. Teenagers can learn these techniques to calm themselves during stressful situations.
MIND-BODY CONNECTION
Kinesiology emphasises the connection between the mind and body. Teenagers can explore techniques like mindfulness and meditation, which promote relaxation, focus, and stress reduction. These practices can help teenagers develop greater self-awareness and learn to manage their stress responses.
STRESS MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES
Kinesiologists can teach teenagers practical strategies to cope with stress. These may include time management skills, goal setting, problem-solving techniques, and stress-reducing activities like journaling or engaging in hobbies. By implementing these strategies, teenagers can better manage their stress levels.
SLEEP HYGIENE
Adequate sleep is crucial for managing stress. Kinesiology can provide guidance on establishing healthy sleep habits, including maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, creating a relaxing bedtime routine, and promoting an optimal sleep environment. Good sleep hygiene can enhance overall well-being and resilience to stress.
NUTRITIONAL GUIDANCE
Kinesiology often includes recommendations for a balanced diet to support overall health and stress management. Teenagers can learn about the impact of nutrition on mood and stress levels and make informed choices about their diet. Proper nutrition can provide the body with essential nutrients needed to maintain optimal physical and mental function.
It's important for teenagers to consult qualified professionals, such as kinesiologists or other healthcare providers, who specialize in working with young individuals and stress management. These professionals can develop personalized strategies based on individual needs and goals.
